I don’t think that Onew has gotten plastic surgery, but this predebut picture is a leetle scary. I don’t like the hint of mustache, it makes him seem older and creepier than he really is (see Onewnja). he still has the same body type, and the same smiling eyes, but that mustache and the bushy eyebrows are a leetle scary to me.
This may be shallow for an Onew fangirl like me, but then, I can’t really be that unjustified, because the kpop industry is first based on appearances and the music comes second. That’s the truth. You can’t make it in the business unless (a) you’re good-looking (b) you have the ability to look good once you get rid of that mustache and bushy eyebrows. Clearly, Onew fits in category b.
I think someone in SHINee who hasn’t changed much since the predebut is Jonghyun— he looks the same as always (except with better haircuts), and I’m very happy that he doesn’t look like he’s been subjected to plastic surgery.
I’m against plastic surgery for kpop idols, because they are usually pushed into it by their management when they look just fine. They may not be ready psychologically for this change, because they have not thought about it extensively and may privately feel that they do not need it. The very concept of pushing yourself to be perfect even through artificial means is disturbing, and is sadly a larger theme of the kpop industry. Yes, I know that plastic surgery is widely accepted in South Korea and is the norm, but studies have shown that plastic surgery fails to boost self body image. If the idols don’t feel better and more confident after their surgery, then what is the point? Even the most beautiful person in the world can be ugly and plain if they do not have any confidence.
This is depressing. Now here’s some Onew Sangtae to cheer you up.
